How to Choose the Right Engraved Memorial Plaque – Materials, Wording & Engraving Types
Introduction
A memorial plaque serves as a lasting tribute to honour a loved one or commemorate a significant event. Selecting the appropriate material, engraving method, and wording ensures the plaque resonates personally and endures over time. At Signs Online, we specialise in crafting custom engraved plaques in the UK, offering both laser and machine engraving options to suit your needs.
1. Choosing the Right Material
Selecting the appropriate material is crucial for durability and aesthetic appeal.
Solid Brass
Appearance: Traditional and elegant
Durability: Develops a natural patina; can be polished to maintain shine
Best For: Memorial bench plaques, dedication signs
Stainless Steel
Appearance: Modern and sleek
Durability: Highly resistant to weather and corrosion
Best For: Outdoor plaques requiring minimal maintenance
Traffolyte / Acrylic
Appearance: Available in various colors
Durability: Lightweight and durable
Best For: Industrial tags, garden markers, indoor tributes
Note: We do not engrave glass on any of our machines due to its fragility and the challenges in achieving lasting results.
2. Understanding Engraving Types
We offer two engraving methods to cater to different preferences and budgets.
Laser Engraving – Cost-Effective & Precise
Method: Uses a high-precision laser to mark the surface
Advantages:
Clean, sharp lettering and detailed designs
Suitable for brass and stainless steel plaques
Budget-friendly with a high-quality finish
Best For: Memorial plaques where a refined look is desired without the higher cost of deep engraving
Machine Engraving – Deep & Infilled
Method: Physically cuts into the surface, infilled with paint (usually black) for contrast
Advantages:
Deep-cut engraving for long-lasting readability
Traditional appearance with enhanced visibility
Best For: Brass, stainless steel, and acrylics; ideal for outdoor memorial plaques exposed to the elements
Tip: Both methods are available on all materials. Let us know your preference or ask for advice when ordering.
3. Crafting the Perfect Wording
The inscription on your plaque should be meaningful and concise.
Examples:
In Loving Memory of John Smith – Forever in Our Hearts
Loved, Missed & Always Remembered – Jane Doe 1945–2021
This Bench is Dedicated to Peter Clarke – A Friend to All
Tips:
Centre and balance the text
Use clear fonts for legibility
Include dates or meaningful phrases
We’ll provide a proof before engraving to ensure the layout meets your expectations.
4. Considering the Placement
The location of your plaque influences material choice and mounting method.
Benches: Brass or stainless steel with screw holes
Walls or Trees: Self-adhesive backings or drilled holes
Indoors: Lightweight acrylic or traffolyte options
Inform us of the intended location, and we’ll recommend the most suitable options.
